"My course is set for an uncharted sea."
-Dante Alighieri
Been in a sort of weird, wandery mood recently and this saying keeps popping into my head, so of course the answer was to letter it, with lots of nautical charts, international stamps and flowing gouache scripting. (Lots of practice with that scripting as well.)

Curious..even with lots of practice..how do you NOT FREAK OUT when putting paintbrush to canvas? Do you practice on another paper until you perfect it..then project it onto your canvas and outline..or?
ReplyDeleteHey Jennifer! I totally DO freak out, especially if I've spent hours perfecting the background and using one of a kind materials and stuff. If you look at the second photo you'll see about 50 sheets of recycled office paper that I practice on until I know exactly the kind of lettering I want. It's really all about practice. Occasionally I'll use a light pencil line to draw my letters on the canvas first, to make sure they're all spaced like I want them.
DeleteOk...so I'm not in the freak out boat alone. ;) Practice, practice, practice....my mantra.
Deletethat's an interesting, weirdo comment up there. but I'm an American woman so I might just think that because I'm mentally unstable and generally immature but at least I'm not anonymous BUT I digress. I can't believe I'm just finding this blog now. I've followed your work since I saw it featured on Oprah and immediately fell in love with your work! My family and I moved abroad to DR about 4 years ago where my husband is a teacher and I am a writer/mother. My love of words and wanderlust are immense. Can't wait to read more on your blog.
